bulblpaw.gif (121 bytes) We’re glad to hear that Almitra,  a beautiful Maltese who is part of Mary and Bruce P.’s family in Caldwell, ID, is doing much better after being quite ill for some time. Thanks to her family’s care and love, Almitra is feeling much better.

bulblpaw.gif (121 bytes) Well, Meggie has moved! Two neighbors, Kay M. and Susan R. of Ramona, CA found out that Kay’s horse, Jack, was totally enamored with Susan’s horse, Meggie during the California wildfires last fall when they spent some time together. Living close to one another, they decided that Meggie could come over during the day to give Jack some company. Well, this has now changed to a permanent move for Meggie to her friend, Jack’s ranch. Kay is thrilled since Jack has his special horse friend with him all the time and she and her husband can enjoy Susan’s company at the same time.

bulblpaw.gif (121 bytes) Congrats to Liz E. of Glen Ridge, NJ on her new horse, Buzz. Liz is excited to get back into riding again after the loss her beloved horse, Goldie. Liz will be working with Buzz on dressage and although he has a lot to learn, Liz is very encouraged by his willingness to try new things and is so proud of his special abilities used in the handicap riding program. Way to go, Buzz!

bulblpaw.gif (121 bytes) Thanks to Karen J., in Sidney, Australia for helping Ruby, a beautiful German Shepherd. Karen fostered Ruby for three months and now she has gone on to her forever home with her new family.

We love to hear what’s going on with you and your animals. Just send us an email at AnimalConn@aol.com and feel free to include a picture.

From the Heart heart2.gif (4940 bytes)

This month, I’d like to highlight one of my clients who really just went SO far out of her way to help a local dog.

Anita D. of Dayton, IA now has a new chocolate Lab, named Spur as part of her family, but not until after a long and exhausting search to find his family and then place him with another family.

Anita D - Spur.JPG (38030 bytes) Spur

One day three girls brought Spur to Anita thinking that he was her dog. And before she knew it Anita was left alone with a dog that wasn’t hers. As Anita already had three dogs and felt having a fourth was out of the question, she decided to call the shelter, but didn’t expect to hear from anyone for a while, as it was Sunday evening. In the mean time, she put Spur in the garage with food and water. She said that at the time he had scars all over him, was limping and you could see all his bones since he was so thin.

Surprisingly, the shelter director returned her call that evening but told her the shelter was full, so animal control was the only option. Anita really didn’t want to do this, as she knew Spur’s life would be limited there, as he would be scheduled to be put down on Friday. So, although he went to the shelter, she put up lost dog signs all over town, advertised him as lost on several web sites and kept calling to find out how he was doing.

After crying so much over what was going to happen to him, her husband told her that if no one claimed Spur by Friday, they could take him but they’d have to find him a home, as they couldn’t take another dog.

So Spur was neutered on Saturday and Anita paid for his medical bills and vaccinations and took Spur home. As it turned out her brother and sister-in-law said they would take him, so Anita was thrilled that he would have a good home.

But then…. Spur’s first family showed up after seeing the lost dog signs. Spur ran to his person and was so happy to see him.  As it turns out they didn’t even realize Spur was gone, so Anita was not too happy about them taking Spur back. Well, the “owner” got so upset that Spur had been neutered that he told Anita’s brother and sister in law to keep Spur and he just walked away leaving Spur behind.

So Spur’s new life, it would seem was now off to a good start with people who cared for him. Well, it turned out that Spur had extreme separation anxiety and became unbelievably destructive. At this point, Anita’s brother said that they could not keep him, so he was back with Anita.

The happy ending to this story is that Anita never gave up on Spur. She and her husband have decided that they could take in a 4th dog and now Spur is part of her family, along with her other dogs, Shadow, Dio and Benson. Anita has had an animal behaviorist work with Spur and he is making improvements with his separation anxiety after her hard work with him.

Anita said that Spur’s fear of being left is still strong, but she is continuing her work with him. She mentioned that she can’t go anywhere, not even to the bathroom, without him springing up, even from a deep sleep and following her.

Anita, thank you so much for taking this one dog’s needs to heart and doing so much to finally give him the good home he deserves. Thank you From the Heart…..from Animal Connection.

1st International Symposium on Veterinary Hospice Care

The Nikki Hospice Foundation for Pets and the Assisi International Animal Institute  are proud to sponsor the First International Symposium on Veterinary Hospice Care, to be held at the University of California at Davis, on March 28-30, 2008, at the School of Veterinary Medicine. This event (the first of its kind) is highly recommended for   veterinarians, holistic veterinarians, veterinary technicians and students, clinical practice managers, hospice professionals and volunteers, nursing personnel and medical staff, psychologists, grief counselors, social workers, bereavement facilitators, death educators, animal health care workers, shelter and SPCA staff, animal communicators, pet massage therapists, and the general public.

Symposium Overview

This symposium will explore veterinary hospice care, based on human hospice models, which addresses the needs of people who wish to care for their dying animals in the comfort of their own homes—under the guidance and assistance of veterinarians and a professional, qualified staff. By training caregivers to provide comforting palliation for their pets and by offering extensive support services as well as effective pain management, veterinary hospice gives dying animals and their people the opportunity to spend meaningful, quality time together before the pet’s final journey. By compassionately closing the “circle of care,” veterinary hospice care honors the human-animal bond, never losing sight of either the companion animal or its caregiver in the total equation—and ultimately serving both in the best possible manner.

FEATURE ARTICLE - From the Horse’s Mouth
Dream Communication

What do you dream about?  Do you remember your dreams?  Have you ever considered that your animal may contact you through a dream?

Animals have told me that they have difficulty communicating with people because our minds are so cluttered with information from our daily lives. Many times, with all our thoughts that are swirling around, our animals can’t seem to get our attention.  I’ve also been told by many animals that the human mind with all its thoughts is so confusing to them. So doesn’t it stand to reason that our animals might try to communicate with us when our minds are not as cluttered…like when we’re asleep or falling off to sleep?

Our minds seem to begin to clear naturally as we start to fall asleep.   As our physical body relaxes, so does our mind. When we are in that quasi dream state right before sleep or when we are actually sleeping, this can be a time when our animals choose to contact us.  The down side is that we may not recall the communication or we may decide it is “only a dream.”

When teaching animal communication skills in my workshops, I tell my students not to discard any information that they feel might be a communication until they come to feel more confident in their skills. I’d suggest the same to you if you dream about a communication from your animal.

But how do we remember our dreams?  Several years ago I worked with a person learning about dream interpretation. Her technique for remembering dreams, which I found very effective, was to journal my dreams in writing to get my mind in the habit of remembering the dreams. It was suggested that I keep a pad and pen near my bed to record my dreams. I was told that as soon as I awakened I should begin writing. I was cautioned not to go get a cup of coffee or even go to the bathroom first because in that short amount of time, the details of the dream will quickly fade.

You may want to try these techniques yourself, whether it be to remember any of your dreams or especially those which are a communication from your animal.

Join us next month for a continuation of this article. Read about two dreams that were acted upon with great success. And in the mean time, ask your animal to contact you in your dreams and work at remembering them.

mail.jpg (1969 bytes) If you've had an experience where you feel your animal has communicated with you through a dream, email us at AnimalConn@aol.com, and we'll include as many of these stories as we can in our next newsletter.

Equine Reality Poem

When you are tense, let me teach you to relax.
When you are short tempered, let me teach you to be patient.
When you are short sighted, let me teach you to see.
When you are quick to react, let me teach you to be thoughtful.
When you are angry, let me teach you to be serene.
When you feel superior, let me teach you to be respectful.
When you are self absorbed, let me teach you to think of greater things.
When you are arrogant, let me teach you humility.
When you are lonely, let me be your companion.
When you are tired, let me carry the load.
When you need to learn, let me teach you.
After all, I am your horse.
